Compression stockings
Compression stockings exert pressure on the legs that decreases from bottom to top. They help the veins transport blood back to the heart and prevent oedema. They are prescribed by a doctor in various compression classes and fitted at a medical supply store.
Areas of use
- varicose veins and venous insufficiency
- swollen legs and lymphoedema
- after thrombosis or surgery
- long flights and bus journeys (travel stockings)
Everyday tips
- put them on in the morning straight after getting up, when the legs are still slim
- donning aids and rubber gloves make putting them on easier
- keep toenails short and smooth – sharp edges damage the fabric
- care for your skin in the evening; in the morning let cream absorb first
Important
With advanced PAD, compression stockings can further reduce circulation – so only wear them after consulting a doctor.
