Glossary
Hallux rigidus
Hallux rigidus is joint wear (osteoarthritis) in the base joint of the big toe. The joint becomes increasingly stiff; above all, bending the big toe upwards when rolling the foot hurts. After hallux valgus it is the second most common condition of the big toe.
Signs
- pain in the big toe joint when walking, especially when rolling off
- restricted mobility of the big toe
- palpable bony thickening on the joint (osteophytes)
- pressure points and calluses due to changed loading
Treatment
Medically, shoe modifications (e.g. a rocker sole), insoles, anti-inflammatory measures and, in advanced cases, surgery are available. We treat the side effects: pressure points and calluses caused by the altered gait, and we protect sensitive areas with pads.
