Glossary
Onychauxis
Onychauxis refers to a thickening of the nail plate which – unlike onychogryphosis – continues to grow straight. The nail becomes thick, hard, often yellowish and difficult to cut.
Causes
- age and declining circulation
- repeated pressure or impact (e.g. sport, tight shoes)
- nail fungus
- psoriasis
Complaints
A thick nail presses on the nail bed in the shoe. This can be painful and lead to bruising or inflammation underneath.
Our treatment
We gently thin the thickened nail plate with burrs and relieve the nail bed. For people with diabetes, this treatment is also available on a doctor’s prescription as nail treatment.
