Onycholysis
Onycholysis is when the nail plate separates completely or partially from the nail bed. The separation usually starts at the free edge of the nail. The detached area looks whitish-cloudy or yellowish because there is air underneath.
Possible causes
- nail fungus – the most common cause on the foot
- pressure and impact injuries (e.g. during sport, shoes too short)
- psoriasis of the nail
- medication, thyroid disorders
What to do?
The cause should be clarified – if fungus is suspected, a laboratory test helps. We carefully trim the detached part, clean the space underneath and relieve the nail. This prevents dirt and germs from settling under the nail. A detached part of the nail does not reattach – only the healthy nail grows back.
