Glossary
Erysipelas
Erysipelas is an infection of the skin and lymphatic vessels with bacteria, usually streptococci. The lower leg is most commonly affected.
Signs
- extensive, sharply defined, warm redness
- swelling and a feeling of tightness
- often fever, chills and feeling unwell
The connection with the foot
The bacteria need an entry point. Very often these are small cracks between the toes caused by athlete’s foot, fissures on the heel or small injuries. That is why it is so important to treat athlete’s foot consistently and keep the skin supple.
Important
Erysipelas must be treated immediately by a doctor with antibiotics. If you suspect it, please do not attend a foot care appointment, but see a doctor first.
