Maceration
Maceration is the softening of the skin caused by prolonged moisture – familiar from “wrinkly fingers” after a long bath. On the foot it mainly affects the spaces between the toes.
Why is it a problem?
Softened skin loses its protective function. It tears easily, and fungi and bacteria can enter. Macerated spaces between the toes are therefore often the start of athlete’s foot or erysipelas.
Causes
- heavy sweating
- tight, poorly breathable shoes
- feet not dried thoroughly
- toes lying close together, e.g. with toe deformities
Prevention
Dry the spaces between the toes thoroughly after washing (if necessary briefly with a hairdryer on a cool setting), fresh cotton or wool socks every day, alternate your shoes. Do not use rich creams between the toes. More in our guide Sweaty feet.
