Monofilament test
In the monofilament test (Semmes-Weinstein), a thin nylon filament is placed on various points on the sole of the foot until it bends. The filament always exerts the same precisely defined pressure of 10 grams. If the person does not feel the touch, protective sensation is impaired.
What is the test for?
It is a simple, painless way of detecting diabetic neuropathy early. People with diabetes should therefore have their feet examined by a doctor at least once a year – more often if there are known risks. The tuning fork test is often carried out as well.
Why does it matter?
Anyone who feels pressure less well often notices injuries too late – a risk for diabetic foot syndrome. An abnormal finding is also the basis for a doctor being able to prescribe podiatry.
