Nail fold
The nail fold is the fold of skin surrounding the nail plate at the sides and base. The groove between the fold and the nail is called the nail groove. At the rear nail fold the skin merges into the eponychium.
Typical problems
- ingrown nail: the nail edge presses into the lateral nail fold
- paronychia: inflammation of the nail fold
- granulation tissue (“proud flesh”) with longer-lasting inflammation
- callus in the nail groove (onychophosis), which presses like a foreign body
What we do
We clean the nail grooves, gently remove callus and pressed-in nail corners and relieve the nail fold – if necessary with a nail correction brace. Tips on cutting correctly in our guide Ingrown toenail.
