Onychoschizia
With onychoschizia, the nail plate splits into individual layers at the free edge – the nail “flakes”. The nails are often also brittle and split easily.
Causes
- frequent alternation between wet and dry
- cleaning agents, nail polish remover
- age – the nails become drier
- less often iron deficiency or thyroid disease
What helps?
Do not cut the nails but shorten them with a fine file in one direction, care for nails and nail folds regularly with oil or cream, avoid aggressive nail polish removers. With very brittle, discoloured nails, nail fungus should be ruled out.
