Dry feet in winter: how to keep your skin supple

Heated air, cold and thick socks take their toll on feet in winter. With the right care, your skin stays supple – and cracks don’t stand a chance.

In winter our feet often suffer in secret: it’s cold outside, heated air dries out the skin indoors, and feet sweat in thick boots. The result is dry, itchy skin, calluses and cracked heels.

Why skin dries out in winter

  • The sole of the foot has no sebaceous glands and can hardly re-moisturise itself
  • Cold slows circulation, dry heated air draws moisture from the skin
  • Hot foot baths and long showers soften the skin and then dry it out even more
  • Warm, tight shoes make feet sweat – ideal for athlete’s foot

Winter care tips

  • Wash your feet in lukewarm rather than hot water and dry them well
  • Moisturise daily with a rich urea foot cream – ideally in the evening, with cotton socks overnight
  • Wear breathable socks and change them quickly if your feet get wet
  • Let winter shoes dry out well, ideally alternating pairs
  • Don’t “thaw” cold feet on the radiator or with a hot-water bottle – with reduced sensation there is a risk of burns
